The manufacturing procedure of ASME SA335 grade P91 pipe starts with its forming by either cold drawing or hot finished followed by heat treatment. The heat treatment begins with the process of normalizing the pipe at 1050 °C followed by cooling down by air at 200 °C and then tempering at about 760 °C. The manufacturing process makes the astm a335 P91 alloy steel pipe well suited to forming, bending, flanging, and fusion welding.
The astm a335 P91 pipe is a seamless Pipe meant for high temperature applications. These pipes are made from ferritic Alloy-Steel. Chemically the a335 P91 welded pipe contains elements like Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium added to the alloy. When Molybdenum and chromium are added to the alloy, there is an increase in the tensile strength of the sa335 grade P91 pipe. The tensile strength of the a335 grade P91 pipe is 415 Mpa, while its yield strength is 205 Mpa. The elongation percentage of the pipe ranges between 20% to 30%.
Further Molybdenum improves the pipe’s resistance to wear, its impact qualities, hardenability, as well as its elastic limit. Molybdenum is one of the most effective alloyants that can increase the creep strength at high temperatures, prevents grain growth, reduces brittleness and has excellent resistance to softening.
While chromium is an important alloyant in the a335 P91 pipes, it is known to prevent corrosion and has high resistance to oxidation at elevated temperature. Corrosion is also prevented in these pipes as they are surface treated or coated. The coating on the surface can be done through various techniques like passivation, phosphating, oil-dip, varnish and shot blasting.
Hence industrial plants, factories and refineries used the astm a335 P91 pipe for transportation of fluids and gases like water, oil and steam at extremely high pressures and temperatures. For example, they are used in power plants, oil refineries and petrochemical plants.
The sa335 P91 grade of pipes is most suitable for applications in the steam boiler. They can be used in boiler drums and parts, pressure vessels in apparatus engineering etc. Further, since the sa335 P91 material pipe can withstand high temperatures, they find application in permanent operations, where the wall temperatures escalate to about 1202 °F or 650 °C.
